What is anodizing?

Anodizing is an electrolytic passivation process used to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface of aluminum. The process is called "anodizing" because during the process the aluminum forms the anode electrode of an electrical circuit. Anodizing increases corrosion resistance and wear resistance, and provides better adhesion for paint primers and glues than bare aluminum. Anodic films can also be used for a number of different cosmetic effects; either with thick porous coatings that can absorb dyes, or with thin transparent coatings that add interference effects to reflected light.

What materials can you anodize?

The following aluminum alloys: 2000 series, 3000 series, 5000 series, 6000 series, and 7000 series. Please call us at (773) 533-3737 to inquire about aluminum castings.
